To safely and effectively clean rust stains from silk dupioni, start by gathering these materials:
Begin by dampening the stained area of the dupioni with white vinegar. If that doesn’t have an effect, try using apple cider vinegar instead.
Once the vinegar has had time to work, use a clean cloth to dab the stain gently, being careful not to rub it. The stain may begin to fade. Rinse the cloth in cold water and repeat this process if necessary until the stain is gone.
If the stain still remainsafter it has been treated with vinegar, apply a few drops of mild, liquid dish soap directly onto the stain. Rub the cloth onto the stained area in a circular motion to create a lather, then rinse with cold water.
Once the stain is gone, hang fabric out to air dry. Do not machine wash, tumble dry, dry clean, or iron the fabric. This could cause the stain to reappear.
With the right steps, even the toughest rust stains can be a thing of the past. To prevent stains from happening in the future, store silk dupioni fabrics away from metal furniture or objects, especially paperclips or jewelry, as these can cause rust spots over time.
