rust

A common problem with shorts is the dreaded rust stain. Whether you've been near a rusty fence, worn them in a rainstorm, or had a run-in with a leaky toolbox, these unsightly stains are hard to get rid of. Thankfully, there are a few simple steps you can take to remove rust stains quickly and effectively.

What You’ll Need:

  • A tub or sink
  • Detergent or a rust-removing solution
  • White vinegar
  • Borax powder
  • Baking soda
  • Toothpaste
  • A sponge or cloth
  • An old toothbrush
  • A washer and dryer (optional)

Step One: Soak the Shorts

The first step to removing rust stains from your shorts is to soak them in a mixture of warm water and detergent, or a specialized rust-removing solution. Allow your shorts to soak for at least half an hour before continuing to the next step.

Step Two: Scrub the Stain

Once your shorts have had enough time to soak, it’s time to take a sponge or cloth and gently scrub the area around the rusty stain. This removes any loose particles that may be lingering on the fabric and will make it easier to remove stain.

Step Three: Apply a Vinegar Solution

Next, mix two parts white vinegar with one part water and apply it to the stained area. Gently rub solution into the fabric. Allow it to sit for at least five minutes before rinsing.

Step Four: Try a Baking Soda Mixture

If the stain has not yet budged after applying the vinegar solution, try mixing together two tablespoons of baking soda, one tablespoon of Borax powder, and one tablespoon of water to create a paste. Apply the paste to the stain and allow it to sit for about 20 minutes. Use an old toothbrush to scrub the area before rinsing.

Step Five: Try Toothpaste

If the stain still persists, you can try using a small amount of white toothpaste. Simply apply the toothpaste directly to the stain and gently rub it in. Let the toothpaste sit for about 10 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water.

Step Six: Wash and Dry

Once the stain is gone, you can toss your shorts in the washing machine. Make sure you use cold water and a mild detergent. If the stain has faded but is still visible, you may want to repeat the soaking and scrubbing process before drying your shorts.

Conclusion

Rust stains can be tricky, but with a few simple steps you can easily get them out of your shorts. Soaking, scrubbing, and applying either a vinegar solution, baking soda paste, or toothpaste can help you get rid of stubborn rust stains. And if all else fails, a trip to the dry cleaner may be necessary!
