Using a Rust Remover

The first step is to find and use a rust remover. Common household items, such as white vinegar and lemon juice, can work as rust removers. Be sure to spot test these products in an inconspicuous area of shirt before treating the stain to ensure material will not be damaged.

If you're using a commercial rust remover, read the instructions carefully before applying. Generally, it's best to mix two parts water to one part solution and apply with a clean cloth. Cover the stain with the solution and allow it to sit for 10-15 minutes. Rinse shirt and inspect the stain; if stain remains, repeat this process until it dissipates.

Using Detergent

If the rust stain is still present, the next step is to use a gentle detergent. First, dampen the stained area with cold water. Apply a few drops of liquid detergent directly onto stain and rub fabric together. This should help break down stain further. Once the stain is rubbed in, let it sit for 15-20 minutes.

After the solution has had time to work, rinse the shirt in cold water and check for any remaining stain. If rust stain is still visible, repeat this process until it disappears.

Removing Stubborn Stains

If the stain persists, you can try using a commercial rust remover. Be sure to follow the instructions on the product carefully, as rust removers can contain harsh chemicals that will damage fabric if used incorrectly. Again, cover the stained area with solution and allow it to sit for 10-15 minutes. Rinse the shirt and inspect the stain. If the stain isn't removed within this time frame, repeat this process until it is gone.
