Rust stains—caused by metal, tools, or minerals in water—can happen to anyone. Luckily, there are several easy methods for removing them from your Ralph Lauren clothing.

1. Lemon Juice and Cream of Tartar

Lemon juice helps break down the rust, making it easier to remove. Simply combine two tablespoons of lemon juice and one teaspoon of cream of tartar. Use an old toothbrush to rub the mixture on stain. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes, then rinse the area with warm water.

2. White Vinegar and Baking Soda

White vinegar is a natural cleaning agent that can work wonders on stubborn rust stains. Create a paste-like mixture by combining two tablespoons of white vinegar with three tablespoons of baking soda. Rub the paste onto the stain using a cloth or sponge. Let the paste sit for 10 minutes, then wash the area with cold water.

3. Oxalic Acid

If other methods didn’t work for you, try oxalic acid. It’s a weak acid that can help dissolve rust. Be sure to use gloves and safety glasses when applying this method. Mix equal parts of oxalic acid and hot water and apply solution to the stained area. Rinse with cold water and launder as usual.

Tips for Removing Rust Stains from Ralph Lauren Clothing

  • Before attempting to remove the stain, pretreat it with a laundry prewash stain remover.
  • Avoid using hot water or bleach, as this can set stain and make it harder to remove.
  • Do a spot test before using any of the methods described above.
  • If none of the above methods work, take garment to a dry cleaner for professional cleaning.
