Rust stains on ponchos can be an unsightly eyesore. Thankfully, they don't need to stay there forever. With a few simple steps, you can quickly remove rust stains from your beloved ponchos. Here's what to do:
Before you start cleaning the rust stain, it's important to make sure that your poncho won't be damaged. To do this, take a dry cloth and dampen it with a solution of 3 parts water and 1 part white vinegar. Then, rub solution onto a small, hidden area of poncho. If color of the fabric doesn't change or fade, then you can proceed to clean poncho.
Once you've tested for colorfastness, it's time to treat the rust stain. Soak a cloth in hydrogen peroxide, then dab it onto the stain. Allow the peroxide to sit for a few minutes before blottiing it up with a paper towel. Finally, rinse the area with cold water.
Once the rust stain has been treated, it's time to put the poncho in the washing machine. Use the gentle cycle and cold water, and add a mild detergent. Once the laundry cycle is complete, check the area to make sure that the stain is gone. If not, repeat steps 1-3.
No one wants to wear a poncho with rust stains. But thanks to simple steps outlined above, that's no longer a problem. Test for colorfastness, treat the stain with hydrogen peroxide, and then launder poncho for a rust-free look.
