To start, use a clean knife or razor blade to scrape away any particles of rust that may be on your mules. This step is important to ensure that no rusty bits remain on the shoe. Take care not to gouge the material of shoe while you’re scraping, as it could cause additional damage.
Mix together one part white vinegar and one part water in a bowl, then submerge your mules in the mixture. Let the shoes soak for five to 10 minutes before moving onto the next step.
Using a soft-bristled brush, gently scrub away the remaining rust. Be sure to work in small circles to ensure you don’t miss any spots. When you are finished, rinse the mules thoroughly with clean water.
Once you’ve rinsed away the vinegar solution, wipe the shoes down with a cloth soaked in lemon juice. The acidity of the lemon juice will help to remove any residue and prevent the rust from returning. Once you are finished, rinse shoes again with clean water and then let them air dry.
