Using a Detergent Soak

The most effective way of removing rust stains from mohair is to create a detergent soak. For this, you’ll need 1/4 cup of grease-fighting dishwashing liquid and 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Fill a sink or bucket with warm water, adding the detergent and vinegar, and mix it together. Submerge the stained area of the fabric in the solution and leave it to soak for 15 minutes. Then, lightly scrub the area with a soft sponge and rinse thoroughly with cold water.

A White Vinegar Remedy

If you prefer to use a less labor-intensive solution, you can try using white vinegar alone. Heat up some white vinegar and dab it onto the rust-stained areas of your mohair fabric with either a cotton swab or a soft cloth. Once the stain has been saturated, rinse with cold water. If the stain isn’t completely removed, repeat the process as necessary.

Other Tips

When washing mohair fabrics, always use the gentle cycle on your washing machine and cold water. Additionally, steer clear of cleaners with chlorine bleach, as this can cause discoloration and damage the fibers of your fabric. And lastly, avoid using hot water when washing rust stains as heat sets the stain into the fabric.
