What You'll Need

  • Mild detergent or ammonia-based cleaner
  • Soft bristled brush
  • Fine steel wool
  • Clean cloth

Instructions

  1. Mix your cleaning solution. Use a mild detergent or ammonia-based cleaner, either alone or diluted with water, depending on the surface and the level of staining.
  2. Scrub the stain. Dampen a soft bristled brush with your cleaning solution and apply firm pressure in a circular motion. Keep scrubbing until you notice the stain lightening.
  3. Remove stubborn stains. If you have stubborn stains that won't come off with a brush, use fine steel wool. Move the steel wool gently in circles on the area until the stain has completely disappeared.
  4. Rinse clean. Once you're done removing the rust, rinse area thoroughly with clean water and a cloth until all traces of the cleaning solution have been removed.

Tips & Tricks

  • Avoid abrasive cleaners and scouring pads when cleaning mesh metal surfaces. These could cause scratches and discoloration.
  • If rust seems to be reappearing, try applying a rust preventative spray to help prevent further staining.
