Rust stains can be one of the most difficult kinds of stains to remove from clothing. If improper care is taken, it can lead to the rust spreading and staining the entire fabric. But don’t just throw away your maxi dress, we’ve got the best simple and economical tips to make it look good as new.

Step 1: Prepare a cleaning solution

In a bowl, mix equal parts of white vinegar and lemon juice to prepare a cleaning solution. Make sure to use freshly squeezed lemon juice for best results.

Step 2: Apply the solution on the rust stain

Dip a clean cloth in the mixture and dab it on rust stain. Make sure to use only a small part of cloth as you might spread the rust if you use too much of cloth.

Step 3: Leave it for a few hours

Allow the solution to sit on the stain for at least 4 to 5 hours and let it do its job. This will help dissolve rust and loosen it from the fabric. During this time, try to avoid any kind of movement or exerting pressure on the stained area so that the mixture does not spread.

Step 4: Rinse the fabric

With a clean rag, rinse off the area and let it air dry. After fabric is completely dry, inspect the area to check for any residual rust. If you still find some traces of rust, repeat the process.

Additional Tips for Cleaning Rust Stains

  • If the rust stain is very old and stubborn, you can add some baking soda to cleaning solution.
  • Washing fabric with detergent and warm water after rinsing can also be helpful.
  • When rinsing the fabric, make sure that no traces of cleaning mixture are left behind.
