Removing Rust from Linen with Natural Solutions

In many cases, using natural solutions is enough to help remove rust stains from linen. One of the best methods involves using a lemon juice and salt mixture to scrub away the stain. Create a paste with two parts lemon juice and one part salt, and then liberally apply the mixture to the stained area. Rub it into the fabric with a soft brush or cloth, and then allow it to sit for several minutes. Rinse the fabric off, and repeat this process if necessary.

Using Store-Bought Detergents for Tough Stains

If the rust stain is particularly resistant, you may need to use a store-bought laundry detergent that contains oxalic acid, such as Zud or Barkeepers Friend. Before applying, wet your linens and then sprinkle the cleaner directly onto the rust stain. Make sure to wear gloves when doing this, as the chemicals can be very harsh on skin. Allow the paste to sit for several minutes and then scrub the fabric in a circular motion. Finally, rinse the fabric and repeat as needed.

Other Tips to Keep in Mind

  • Always test any cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area of fabric before using it on the stained area.
  • No matter what method you choose, make sure to check the label of your fabric for any special instructions before cleaning.
  • Always pre-treat the fabric before washing it in the washing machine.
