Things You'll Need

  • White vinegar
  • Salt
  • Cream of tartar
  • Lemon juice
  • Soft cloth
  • Non-abrasive sponge

Instructions

  1. Start by creating a mixture of white vinegar and salt. Mix two tablespoons of salt and one cup of white vinegar together in a bowl. Stir mixture with a spoon until the salt dissolves.
  2. After making vinegar and salt mixture, apply it on rust stain and put it aside for a few minutes so that the vinegar can work on the stain.
  3. Once the substance has had a chance to soak in, take a non-abrasive sponge and gently scrub away the stain. Make sure to use light strokes and not press too hard or you may cause additional damage to the fabric.
  4. Next, mix two tablespoons of cream of tartar with one tablespoon of lemon juice and stir until a paste forms. Apply the paste directly to stain and let it sit for a few minutes.
  5. Using a soft cloth, rub the paste gently onto the stain in a circular motion. The cream of tartar has a mild abrasive quality which helps to break up the rust. Continue rubbing until the stain is gone.
  6. Finally, rinse the garment under cold running water and allow it to air dry before wearing it again.

Tips

  • Be sure to treat the rust stain as quickly as possible. The longer it sits, the harder it will be to remove stain.
  • If the stain persists, you can also try using commercial rust stain removers.
  • Always test the cleaner on a small area of garment first to ensure that it does not damage fabric.
  • If all else fails, take your J Crew garment to a professional cleaner.
