Rust stains can be a real problem for leather handbags, especially if the handbag is an expensive item or has sentimental value.

Fortunately, you can get rid of rust stains with some basic items from around the house. Here’s how:

Supplies Needed:

  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Old toothbrush
  • Soft cloth
  • Leather protectant

Step 1: Make a Vinegar Solution

Create a solution of ¼ cup of vinegar and one quart of warm water in a bowl. Dip a soft cloth in the solution and wring it out until it’s damp. Wipe away any particles of rust on surface of the handbag.

Step 2: Apply Baking Soda

Cover the stained area with baking soda and let it sit for several minutes. Then, use an old toothbrush to scrub the baking soda gently into the stain until it’s removed.

Step 3: Wipe Away Residue

Wet a cloth with plain water and wipe the affected area to remove any remaining baking soda. Dry the handbag with a clean cloth. You may notice the stain lightening, but you may need to repeat this process a few times to completely remove it.

Step 4: Add Leather Protectant

Once stain has been removed, you can apply a leather protectant to the area to help keep it looking new. Follow the instructions on the leather protectant to make sure you’re using it correctly.

Conclusion

Rust stains can wreak havoc on your handbag, but with the right supplies and a bit of elbow grease, you can have your handbag looking like new again.
