What You’ll Need

  • Vinegar
  • Lemon juice
  • Baking soda
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Toothbrush

Step One: Pre-treating with Vinegar

The first step is to pre-treat fabric with vinegar. Pour a small amount of white vinegar directly onto the stain and allow it to soak for up to an hour. This will help to loosen the rust particles, making them easier to remove in the next step.

Step Two: Scrub the Stain with Baking Soda

After the vinegar has had time to work its magic, the next step is to make a baking soda paste. Simply mix a teaspoon of baking soda with two teaspoons of water until you form a thick paste. Then, use an old toothbrush to scrub the paste into stain. The baking soda will act as an abrasive and help to break up rust particles.

Step Three: Rinse and Repeat

Once the baking soda has been scrubbed into the stain, rinse area with cold water. This will help to further loosen the rust particles and lift them off of the fabric. If the stain remains, repeat steps one and two until it is fully removed.

Step Four: Treat with Lemon Juice

If all else fails, lemon juice is great for removing stubborn rust stains. Soak a cotton ball in lemon juice and dab it onto affected area. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before scrubbing the area with a toothbrush. Rinse with cold water and repeat as necessary.

Step Five: Wash With Detergent

Once the stain has been successfully removed, wash the garment with regular detergent. This will help to get rid of any remaining residue and restore your fleece to its former glory.
