Things You Need

To remove rust stains from fabric, you will need several items:

  • A packet of rust remover powder
  • Gentle detergent
  • White vinegar
  • A soft-bristled brush
  • A towel or rag

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Begin by mixing rust remover with a small amount of water, according to the directions on the package.
  2. Apply a dollop of the mixture to the rust stain and gently scrub at it with the brush. Do not rub too hard, as this can damage the fibers.
  3. Once you have scrubbed at the stain, rinse area with warm water.
  4. Mix one teaspoon of liquid detergent with one cup of warm water.
  5. Soak a towel or rag with your cleaning mixture and place it over the stain. Allow it to soak for several minutes.
  6. Remove the cloth and rinse area with warm water.
  7. If any traces of the stain remain, create a solution of one tablespoon of white vinegar and one cup of warm water.
  8. Soak a cloth in the solution and place it over the stain. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes.
  9. Rinse off the area with cold water and allow the fabric to air dry.

Tips for Removing Rust Stains from Fabric

  • Always read the care instructions on the label of the item before beginning. Some fabrics cannot be washed with bleach or other harsh chemicals.
  • Act quickly when you notice a rust stain. The longer it sits, the harder it can be to remove.
  • When possible, take item outside to clean. This way, you don’t spread the rust stains to other surfaces.
