Clean Rust Stains from Draperies and Curtains Step-by-Step

  1. Identify the type of fabric of your drapes or curtains. Depending on the fabric, you may need to use different cleaning products.
  2. Gently brush away any loose or excess rust particles.
  3. Make an oxygen bleach solution — mix one part oxygen bleach with three parts cold or warm water.
  4. Submerge rust stained area of your drapes/curtains into the oxygen bleach solution for 10 minutes, or according to the fabric label instructions.
  5. Remove rust stained area from the solution and gently rub or brush away any remaining rust particles.
  6. Rinse your drapes/curtains with cold water.
  7. Once rinsed, hang them to dry.

Additional Tips

  • Use a soft bristle brush if necessary to scrub away at the stain. Never use a metal brush or wire to remove rust stains.
  • If you do not have oxygen bleach, you can make a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide and apply it to the rust stained area.
  • If the rust stain persists, you may need to use a commercial rust remover or contact a professional cleaner.
  • Always test any cleaning product or solution on a small, inconspicuous area of fabric first.
