Salt, Vinegar, and Lemon Juice

These common kitchen ingredients can be the perfect, natural solution to rust stains. Combine equal parts of salt and lemon juice, and sprinkle them on board. Using a sponge or cloth, rub the mixture into the rusted area in a circular motion until the spot is completely covered. Let mixture sit for an hour, then rinse it off with warm water. Repeat this process if needed.

Baking Soda and Water

For tough and deep-rooted rust stains, baking soda and water are another great combination. Mix four tablespoons of baking soda with enough warm water to make a paste, and apply it directly to the stained area. Use a scrub brush or sponge to work the paste into the board, and let it sit for 30 minutes. Scrub back and forth until the rust is removed. Rinse the board with warm water, and dry it immediately with a cotton or linen cloth.

Cream of Tartar

Cream of tartar is another effective cleaner that works wonders on rust stains. Create a paste with two teaspoons of cream of tartar and one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide. Apply the paste to the affected areas, and let it sit for 30 minutes. Use a scrub brush to work it into the board. Rinse with warm water, and dry with a clean cloth.

Preventative Measures

Regular cleaning and maintenance of your cutting boards can help prevent rust from forming. After each use, wash the surface with hot water and a mild detergent. Dry it immediately with a soft cloth. Once a month, rub a few drops of mineral oil onto the board with a clean cloth. This will help keep it hydrated and free from rust.
