Rust stains on fabric, especially delicate fabrics like crepe, can be challenging to remove. But fortunately, there are several methods to get rid of them and return your crepe back to its original condition. Here are some tips for cleaning rust off crepe fabric.
Using Lemon and Salt
Mix together equal parts lemon juice and salt until you create a paste. Generously spread the paste over the rust stain and let it sit for 30 minutes or so. Then, rinse the paste away with cold water and use an old toothbrush to scrub at the fabric gently. Once the rust has been loosened, dip fabric in a bucket of cold water and let it soak for 1-2 hours. Rinse the fabric off with cold water and repeat the process as needed until rust stain is gone.
Using Vinegar
Vinegar is a powerful rust-removing agent that won't damage your fabric. Pour white vinegar directly onto the rust stain and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Scrub fabric gently with a soft brush and put the garment in a basin filled with cold water. Let the fabric soak for 1-2 hours before washing the garment and rinsing it off with cold water.
Using Baking Soda
Baking soda is another effective cleaning method for rust stains. Mix 3 parts baking soda with 1 part warm water to make a paste. Apply the mixture onto the rust-stained area and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then, scrub the fabric gently with an old toothbrush or cloth and rinse it off with cold water. Repeat the process as needed until the stain is gone.
Using Cream of Tartar
Cream of tartar is a natural stain remover that can help get rid of rust stains on crepe fabric. Mix 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Generously spread the paste onto the rust-stained area and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. Then, scrub fabric gently with an old toothbrush and rinse off the paste with cold water. Follow up by soaking the fabric in a bucket of cold water for 1-2 hours.
Preventative Tips
To prevent rust stains from forming in the future, make sure not to leave metal items such as zippers, buttons, and clips in contact with crepe fabric. Additionally, protect your fabric from moisture as much as possible to reduce the incidence of rust stains.
