Cotton gingham is a lightweight and breathable fabric that comes in an array of colors and patterns. However, rust stains can be a common problem with this fabric, especially if item gets wet and is not dried correctly. Here are some steps you can take to remove those pesky rust stains from your cotton gingham.
When it comes to rust stains, time is of the essence. The longer a stain has to set, the harder it will be to remove. So, the first step is to act as soon as you can. If possible, treat stain before any laundering or cleaning.
Once you discover a rust stain, pre-treat it with a stain remover made specifically for removing rust. This type of remover can be found at many grocery and hardware stores. Follow the instructions on package. If you’d prefer a less harsh option, you can also make a paste out of equal parts baking soda and water and apply it to the stain. Let it sit for a few hours before washing.
After allowing the stain remover or baking soda paste to work, it’s time to launder the fabric. Set your machine to the hottest water temperature allowed for the fabric. For most cottons, this should be warm or cold water. Add a laundry detergent that is suitable for light fabrics. Wash the item with similar items and avoid overdrying.
Once the fabric is out of the wash, check to see if the rust stain is still present. If it’s still there, repeat steps two and three. If the stain is still there after two tries, you may want to consider taking the fabric to a professional cleaner.
