Rust stains on cotton denim often occur from exposed metal zippers, rivets, or buttons that may come in contact with the fabric. While these stains can seem daunting and difficult to remove, there are several methods to do so with relative ease.

Step 1: Determine Stain Type

The best way to determine how to remove a rust stain is to first determine type of rust stain and the best way to do that is to run a small test. To do this, apply a small amount of diluted detergent to an inconspicuous area of the fabric and rinse the fabric. If the rust stain persists, proceed to step 2 and if it has been removed, you may proceed to step 3.

Step 2: Use a Rust Remover

For persistent rust stains, a rust remover or rust-removing product should be used. These products include oxalic acid, citric acid, and white vinegar. Follow the directions on the product label before applying to the fabric. Once applied, rinse the fabric thoroughly and proceed to step 3.

Step 3: Clean With Detergent and Bleach

Once the rust stain has been removed, it is best to clean the fabric with a mild detergent and some bleach. Bleach will help to ensure that all traces of the rust are gone and the fabric is completely clean. Follow the instructions on the detergent package and use two parts detergent to one part bleach. Rinse the fabric thoroughly.

Step 4: Dry and Repeat as Necessary

Once the fabric has been cleaned and rinsed, fabric should be dried in sun or tumble-dried. Check for any remaining stains and if any are present, go through steps 1-3 again as needed.
