Rust stains on clothing can be tricky to get out, especially on delicate fabrics like thick wool or denim. Removing rust stains from chinos - the classic cotton pants beloved by preppy men and stylish women alike - can take a bit more finesse as chinos require a gentler approach. With this method, you'll be able to keep your pants looking fresh without the fuss.

What You Will Need

  • White vinegar
  • Citrus juice or soda
  • Salt
  • Soft cloth
  • Water

Step 1: Soak the Stain

Create a paste with salt and white vinegar, and spread it onto the stain with a soft cloth. Let it sit until the paste begins to dry, then add a few drops of citrus juice or soda to moisten the paste.

Step 2: Rub the Stain Away

Gently rub the paste into the rust stain using a circular motion. Make sure to use only light pressure, as too much rubbing can cause damage to the fabric.

Step 3: Rinse Out the Paste

Once rust stain has been rubbed out, rinse the paste off with cold water. Ensure that all of the paste is removed before proceeding to the next step.

Step 4: Soak the Stain Again

Soak the stained area in a mixture of cold water and white vinegar for up to 30 minutes. This will help to remove any remaining residue.

Step 5: Apply Laundry Detergent

Apply laundry detergent directly to the stain and rub it in using a soft cloth. Let it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing with cold water.

Step 6: Machine Wash

Once stain has been thoroughly removed, place the chinos in a regular machine washing cycle. Hang the pants to dry afterwards, avoiding direct sunlight.
