The first step towards removing rust stains from a button-down shirt is to gather the necessary supplies. You will need some sort of rust remover, such as white vinegar or lemon juice. You will also need a clean white cloth, a toothbrush, and some liquid laundry detergent.

Next, place the stained shirt on a flat surface and dampen the stained area with white vinegar or lemon juice. Allow the solution to sit on the fabric for several minutes before scrubbing with a toothbrush. Once you have loosened the stain, wash affected area with liquid laundry detergent and cold water.

If the stain persists, you may need to use a stronger cleaning solution. It is best to consult a professional before using any harsh chemicals, such as chlorine bleach. If you do use chlorine bleach, be sure to test it on a small, hidden area of the garment first.

Once the rust stain has been removed, proceed with laundering the shirt as usual. Be sure to hang the shirt to dry rather than putting it in dryer. The heat from the dryer could cause the stain to set in, making it even harder to remove.

With these few simple steps you can easily remove rust stains from your button-down shirt. With a little patience and effort, your favorite shirt can look like new again!
