Using a rag or soft brush, gently scrub the affected area with a solution of liquid laundry detergent and warm water. Scrub the stain for a few minutes, then let it sit for 30 minutes. This gives the detergent time to break down the rust stain.
After pre-treating the stain, rinse it off with cold water. Be sure to rinse thoroughly to remove any residue.
Fill a bowl with hot water and a few teaspoons of white vinegar. Soak stained area of the fabric in the mixture for 30 minutes. The acidity of vinegar helps to lift the stain from the fibers.
After soaking the fabric, launder the briefs as usual. It's best to use a mild detergent and cold water for delicate fabrics.
Once the briefs are washed, hang them up to air dry or tumble dry on low heat. Avoid putting them in dryer on the highest heat setting, as this could cause the rust stain to set further into fabric.
