Rust stains are caused by contact with an iron object, often times due to dampness in the surrounding area. Even if you don't think you've come into contact with an iron object, the stains may still appear as a result of moisture in the air. Regardless of why the stains have appeared, the process for removing them is relatively straightforward.

Step 1: Pre-Treat the Stains

Begin by pre-treating the stains with a laundry detergent or a pre-treatment solution. If using a laundry detergent, pour a small amount onto the stain and rub the detergent gently into the fabric. If using a pre-treatment solution, follow the instructions provided on bottle. Allow the product to sit for 10-15 minutes before proceeding to step 2.

Step 2: Soak the Blouse in Hot Water

Fill a large basin or sink with hot water. Submerge the blouse completely and let it soak for at least 1 hour. During this time, the pre-treatment solution and/or laundry detergent should start to loosen and remove rust stains.

Step 3: Launder the Blouse as Usual

Once blouse has finished soaking, rinse it thoroughly with cold water. Wash the blouse using the appropriate laundry detergent and machine cycle according to the care label instructions. Once the cycle has finished, inspect the garment for any remaining rust stains. If they remain, repeat steps 1-3 until the rust stains are removed.
