rust

Rust stains can occur as a result of moisture, humidity, or even contact with metals like pins, buckles, or jewelry. The best thing to do is to act fast by containing the stain and cleaning it immediately.

Step 1: Contain The Stains

The first step is to contain the stain. Rust can spread quickly, so you need to block it off from spreading to other parts of fabric. Put paper towels under and around the rust stains, and cover the stain with salt, baking soda, or talcum powder.

Step 2: Vinegar Solution

Grab some white vinegar and mix it with an equal amount of water. Pour this solution over the stained area, rub it in, and let it sit for 10 minutes. If stain is particularly deep, you may have to put more vinegar onto it. After 10 minutes is up, rinse the fabric with clean cool water.

Step 3: Detergent Wash

Now it’s time to wash garment with detergent. If gown is white, try using a bleach-based detergent, otherwise go for an oxygen-based detergent instead. Fill a bucket with lukewarm water, and add a capful of detergent. Put the garment into water, and agitate it gently. Let the fabric soak for about 15 minutes, and then rinse thoroughly.

Step 4: Drying

Lay the dress flat on a towel and roll it up so that the rust stain is facing outward. Gently press the towel to absorb any excess moisture. Hang the garment on a clothes line but make sure that it stays out of direct sunlight. Alternatively, you can hang it indoors in a shaded area. Once completely dry, check to see if the rust stains have disappeared.
