Scrubbing Your Backpack

The first step towards removing rust stains from your backpack is to get some metal-grade scrubbing brush and fill it with an abrasive liquid cleaner. This could include any type of detergent, such as dish soap, laundry detergent, or even white vinegar. You'll want to make sure the bristles on brush are sturdy enough to take on the rust without tearing the fabric of your backpack. Once you have the brush filled, scrub the affected area gently to loosen the rust.

Applying a Cleanser

Once the rust has been loosened, you can then apply a cleanser to the area. There are several commercially available rust removers that can do trick, but you can also make a paste using baking soda and lemon juice if you don't have a store-bought solution. Whichever you choose, make sure to apply it in a generous coating and let it sit for about 10 minutes before scrubbing again.

Using a Coarse Spong

Once you have scrubbed the area with cleanser, it's time to use a coarse sponge. A sponge with a good scrubbing action is ideal for removing rust stains, so be sure to get one with a rough surface. Gently rub the sponge on the stained area and let the sponge work its magic. This might take a few strokes, but eventually the stain should come away.

Cleaning with Oxalic Acid

For tougher rust stains, you may need to use oxalic acid to get them off. This can be a dangerous substance, so make sure to follow all manufacturer instructions carefully. Mix the acid with water in a container according to the directions, then use a sponge or rag to gently rub it onto the stain. Let the solution sit for a few minutes before rinsing away with warm water.

Final Rinse

When you're done and the rust is gone, rinse backpack off with warm water to get rid of any residue that could cause more staining down the line. You may need to repeat these steps a few times to completely remove the rust, but it's worth it.
