Pre-Treat with a Stain Remover

The first step to removing rouge from your sweaters is to pre-treat stain with a stain remover. Look for one that is specifically formulated for colorfast fabrics so it won't harm your clothing. Place a small amount of the stain remover directly onto the stain and allow it to sit for a few minutes before washing.

Wash on a Gentle Cycle

Sweaters are delicate fabrics, so you'll want to use a gentle cycle. Set your machine for cold water and use a mild detergent. Check the garment label for specific instructions. If handwashing, use cool or lukewarm water and a mild detergent.

Skip the Dryer

When it comes to removing tough stains, dryer isn't your friend. The heat will cause the stain to set, making it much harder to remove. Instead, lay your sweaters flat or hang them up to air dry.

Follow Up with a Stain Remover Stick or Spray

If the stain is still there after washing, try using a stick or spray-on stain remover. These products can be applied directly to the stained area and left for a few minutes before washing again. For maximum effectiveness, use a prewash stain remover before washing.

Use Oxygen-Based Bleach

For really tough stains, you may need to resort to using an oxygen-based bleach. This is a safer alternative to chlorine bleach, which can damage delicate fabrics. Mix up a solution of oxygen-based bleach and warm water, and soak the garment for 30 minutes. Then rinse, wash as usual, and air dry.
