The first step in tackling a tough stain is to determine what type of fabric the sweater is made of. This will inform rest of the cleaning process. For example, if the sweater is made of a wool blend then it should be either hand-washed or dry cleaned; however, an acrylic sweater could be machine-washed.
To pre-treat the stain, it's important to do a patch test before applying the cleaning solution over the entire area. This will help ensure that the fabric does not discolor or become damaged. Make a solution of water and a teaspoon of mild laundry detergent and apply it directly to the stain with a cloth. If the stain is particularly tough, you can try using a stain remover spray as well. Let the solution sit for 10-15 minutes before washing as normal.
Once the stain has been pre-treated, it's time to wash the sweater. Follow the care instructions on the label and use the gentlest cycle possible. Set the water temperature to cold and add a mild detergent. For best results, wash the sweater alone. Do not put any other items into the washing machine.
Most wool and other delicate-fabric sweaters should be laid flat to air dry. For other materials, you can use a low-heat setting in the dryer. Make sure to remove the sweater from the dryer promptly so it does not become over-dried.
With the right steps, you can take stress out of removing rouge stains from your sweaters. Just remember to test any cleaning solution you use on a small patch of fabric, and always follow the instructions on the label when it comes to washing and drying the item.
