The classic approach for removing a stain is to use detergent and water. Start by dampening some paper towels with warm water and rubbing them together with a small amount of detergent. Then, place the paper towels on the affected area of the down and press gently. Rinse paper towel off in clean water and repeat the process until the rag comes out clean.
If the stain is still visible after using detergent and water, you can try spot treating the area with a combination of vinegar and baking soda. Start by mixing 1 part vinegar and 2 parts baking soda and stir until it forms a paste. Apply the paste directly to stain and let it sit for 15 minutes. After that, rinse off with warm water and then use a soft cloth to blot away any remaining residue.
If your down jacket has stubborn rouge stains, then dry cleaning might be the best option. Most dry cleaners have the necessary expertise and equipment to deal with tough stains like rouge. Remember to ask for specialized treatment for the down filling, since regular methods like steam cleaning can damage feathers.
