Begin your stain removal by diluting it. Make sure to use cold water so that warm temperature doesn’t set in the dye and make the stain permanent. Using a soft toothbrush, gently scrub the stained area with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and cold water. Rinse area with cold water.
Pretreat the stain before attempting to do a full wash. This will reduce the risk of the stain becoming permanent. Make sure to use a gentle detergent. Apply pretreatment to stain and let it sit for at least 10 minutes.
Once you’ve pretreated the area, you can choose to either handwash or machine wash the item. If you opt for the latter, make sure to set the water temperature to “cold” if it’s a light colored fabric, or to “warm” if it’s a dark one. Add detergent to the washing machine, and then add the wool item.
Once the item is washed, rinse it thoroughly with cold water. Avoid using hot water, as this will set the stain. Once you’re finished rinsing the item, carefully squeeze out excess water and let it air dry. Do not put it in dryer or place it near a direct heat source, as this could shrink the wool.
