Gathering Supplies
When dealing with red wine, it is important to act quickly in order to minimize the stain. Before attempting to clean the stain, assemble necessary supplies:
- Club soda or white wine
- Baking soda
- Laundry detergent
- Old towels
The Process
If the spill is still wet:
- Blot away as much of the excess wine as possible with an absorbent cloth or paper towel.
- Cover the stain with baking soda. Work it into the fibers of the fabric.
- Pour club soda or white wine directly onto the stain. The carbonation in beverage will help to lift the stain away.
- Rinse the affected area with cold water to remove any remaining wine.
- If necessary, re-apply baking soda to the area and launder the garment according to the care instructions.
If spill has dried and set in:
- Soak a clean rag in hot water and place it directly over the stain.
- Allow the cloth to stay put for a few minutes to help loosen up stain. Don’t use boiling water as this can cause permanent damage to the fabric.
- Remove the cloth and blot the stained area with a clean towel or paper towel.
- Sprinkle baking soda directly over stain and gently work it into fabric with your fingers.
- Apply laundry detergent directly to the stain and let it sit for a few minutes.
- Launder according to the garment's care instructions.
After following these steps, the stain should be successfully removed, leaving the Versace garment looking like new.
