Red wine has a tendency to be one of the most difficult stains to remove from traditional clothing. Because of its high acidity level, red wines can easily set into clothing fabrics and become permanent if not treated quickly. If you have spilled wine on your traditional dress, you will need to act fast in order to prevent a permanent stain.

Removal Steps

  • Blot: Start by blotting up as much of the liquid as possible using a clean, dry cloth or paper towel.
  • Mix: In a bucket, mix 1 quart of cold water with ½ teaspoon of liquid hand dishwashing detergent.
  • Soak: Soak the stained area of clothing in the solution for 30 minutes.
  • Rinse: Remove the garment from the bucket and rinse away any detergent or wine residue.
  • Repeat: Repeat the soaking, rinsing, and blotting process until the stain is completely gone.
  • Wash: Launder the garment according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure to use cold water only.
  • Analyze: Once the garment is fully dried, analyze the area to make sure the stain is completely gone.

Additional Tips

  • Club Soda: Club soda is an effective alternative to the detergent and water solution. Simply douse the stained area with the soda and let it sit for at least 10 minutes before washing.
  • Vinegar Solution: For tougher stains, mix ¼ cup of white vinegar with ¾ cup of water and saturate stain. Let the solution soak for around 20 minutes then rinse and launder normally.
  • Permanent Stains: If the stain does not come out after several attempts, the fabric may be permanently damaged. Consider taking the garment to a professional cleaner for deeper cleaning.

Things to Avoid

  • Hot Water: Hot water should never be used when cleaning a red wine stain. The heat will cause the stain to set permanently into the fabric.
  • Bleach: Bleach can also cause discoloration and should be avoided.
