It’s inevitable: accidents happen. Whether your children are playing in the park or inviting friends over to the house, it’s all too easy for your kids’ toys to accidentally get stained by spilled red wine. Don’t worry though; here are five easy ways to try and remove red wine stains from your kids’ playthings.
The first step is to absorb as much of red wine as possible. The best way to do this is to use a plain paper towel to blot the area. If available, you can also use a cloth napkin or an absorbent cloth, such as a clean tea towel.
Before cleaning the toy, you’ll want to make sure that the cleaning agent you’re using won’t damage it. To do this, perform a spot test on an inconspicuous area of the toy, such as the underside. Then, wait around 30 minutes, and check to see if spot test has caused any discoloration or fading.
Once you’ve done the spot test, you can use a damp cloth or sponge to start working on the stain. You can add a small amount of one of following cleaning agents to the cloth or sponge as you work: dish soap, non-bleach laundry detergent, white vinegar, or rubbing alcohol. Rub lightly, and avoid using a circular motion. This can cause discoloration.
Once you’ve removed red wine stain, rinse area with a cloth dampened with plain water to remove any remaining traces of cleaner. Be sure to go lightly, as too much scrubbing can damage the surface.
Finally, let your toy air dry before allowing your kids to play with it. This will help to ensure that all traces of the cleaning solution have been removed.
