The first step to removing red wine stains is to act fast. Take a paper towel or cloth and blot stain gently but firmly. Blotting should be done in the direction away from the center of the stain. This will help repel the wine out of the material instead of pushing it in further.
When that is done, fill a sink with cold water and soak the stained area in it for at least 10 minutes. If the stain persists after that, pour some white wine on the affected area; this will help neutralize the red wine. Let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing it off with cold water.
Once the stain is gone, take your piece of clothing to a regular washing machine and wash it with a mild detergent. As an extra precaution, you can add a stain-fighting agent such as Shout or OxiClean to the wash to make sure the stain does not come back.
Finally, hang garment to dry. Don't put it in dryer until you are 100% sure that the stain has been removed. The heat of dryer will set any remaining stain, making it even harder to remove.
