Red wine spills often leave a nasty stains on fabric, especially on lighter colors. However, tartan is made out of wool, which is an absorbent material, so all hope of getting it clean is not lost. The first step is to act quickly – red wine can drip deep into the fabric and becoming harder to remove. To start cleaning immediately, follow these steps:

  1. Soak up as much liquid as possible with paper towels.
  2. Cover red wine stain with salt or cornstarch, and let sit for 10 minutes.
  3. Wash stain in cold water and mild detergent, using circular motions.
  4. Rinse off the detergent in cold water.
  5. If the red wine stain is still visible, create a vinegar solution with 1 tablespoon of white vinegar and 2 cups of cold water.
  6. Dab the solution onto stain and let it sit for 10 minutes.
  7. Rinse off the solution in cold water.
  8. If needed, soak the fabric in a solution of 1 tablespoon of ammonia and 2 cups of cold water for 10-15 minutes.
  9. Rinse off the solution in cold water and hang the fabric to dry.

With these steps, your tartan should be free of red wine stains. Remember to always use cold water when doing your washing; warm or hot water can cause the stain to set into the fabric fibers. With care and proper maintenance, your tartan garments will last for years.
