Step One: Right Away!

Ideally, it is best to tackle the stain as soon as you can so that it doesn’t set into the fabric. The sooner the better! Start by blotting the area with a sponge or towel to absorb excess liquid.

Step Two: Irriate the Stain

After blotting up what you can, next you will want to “irritate” the stain – that means to add something to stain that will cause it to react, which makes it easier for you to remove later. To do this, you can use either white wine (or a mixture of white wine and water) or club soda. Pour it directly over the stain, then allow it to sit for a few minutes.

Step Three: Soak It Up

Next, use a dry cloth to soak up the mixture. Do not rub it – this could cause stain to spread. Instead, gently press down on the area to absorb the liquid.

Step Four: Cleanse It

Now, it’s time to clean the area. In a bowl, mix one teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent with one quart of warm water. Dip a clean cloth into mixture, then gently dab the stain. Apply just enough pressure to cause the stain to lift off the fabric. Do not rub or scrub – this could damage fabric.

Step Five: Rinse and Repeat

Rinse the area with cool water and repeat the process until the stain is gone. Once the stain is gone, rinse area again with cool water to remove any soap residue. Allow the area to air dry.
