If you’re dealing with a fresh stain, you’ll need to act fast if you want to eliminate it. The sooner you attack the stain, the better your chances will be. The best course of action is to soak up as much of wine as possible with a paper towel--just make sure that you’re doing this in blotting motions rather than rubbing, as this will cause the stain to spread. Then, mix together a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and cold water. Soak the affected area of the sock in this mixture for 30 minutes. After it’s done soaking, scrub the stain gently with a toothbrush. You’ll then want to rinse the sock in cold water, and launder as usual. If you’re dealing an older stain, try pre-treating the area with a stain remover before laundering. Allow it to sit on the stain for 10 minutes before washing, and then launder as usual. It's also important to remember that while these methods should work on most fabrics, they may not work on 100% wool socks. For this type of fabric, you should probably contact a professional dry cleaner.
