To start, blot the stained area of the dress with a damp, white cloth or sponge. Don't rub the stain, or you may spread it further. You may need to use some lifting motion when blotting so that the stain will move away from the fabric.

Once you've blotted away as much of red wine as possible, it's time to pretreat the stain. Mix equal parts of white vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle, or create a paste of 3 parts baking soda and 1 part water. Spray or apply the solution directly to the stain and let it sit for about 20 minutes. Then, place a clean cloth over the stain and press down gently with a warm iron for about 10 seconds. This should help remove more of the stain.

When the stain has been removed as much as possible, it's time to launder the garment. Start by checking the care label for washing instructions. Then, fill a sink or bucket with cold water and add a small amount of delicate laundry detergent. Gently swish the dress in the water and then rinse until the soap is gone. Lay the dress flat or hang it to dry.

By following these steps, you should be able to get rid of most red wine stains on silk satin. If you do find a stubborn stain that won't come out, it's safest to take the garment to a professional cleaner. Don't use bleach as it may cause damage to the fabric.
