If you love wearing silk charmeuse, chances are you’ve had at least one accident involving a glass of red wine. The good news is, with the right know-how, it is possible to get the stain out without ruining the fabric.
Step 1: Blot and Rinse
The most important rule—never rub! Rubbing will only embed the stain further into the fabric, and make it harder to remove. Instead, blot the stain with a wet cloth or paper towels to soak up any liquid.
Once the excess wine is gone, rinse the spot with cold water, and continue to blot. Keep in mind that it’s important to not use hot water, as this can set the stain permanently into the fabric.
Step 2: Soak Stain
Fill a bowl or sink with lukewarm water, and add a little bit of laundry detergent. Put the spot of the stain directly into the bowl or sink, and let it soak for around 30 minutes. If necessary, gently knead the spot while it’s in the soapy water.
Step 3: Wash the Garment
After the garment has soaked long enough, rinse it in cold water to get out any remaining detergent. Once stain has been removed, you can throw it into washing machine. It’s important to set the cycle to delicate, and use a mild detergent. Make sure to rinse twice.
Step 4: Hang and Dry
To ensure stain is completely gone, air drying is the best way to go. Hang up the garment in a spot with plenty of air flow (preferably outside). Don’t forget to turn the fabric inside out, as this will help avoid fading.
