Things You'll Need

  • Clean cloths
  • Laundry detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Salt
  • Bicarbonate of soda

Step 1: Blot

Using a clean cloth, blot the area of shoe with the red wine stain as soon as possible. Blotting removes any excess liquid and prevents the stain from spreading or becoming set into the material.

Step 2: Wash

Mix a few drops of laundry detergent with warm water to create a sudsy solution. Dip a clean cloth into the solution and use it to gently scrub the red wine stain on shoe. Rinse shoe with cold water after scrubbing and let it air dry.

Step 3: Vinegar Soak

If the stain remains, mix one part white vinegar with two parts cold water. Using a clean cloth, soak stained area of the shoe in the mixture for 10 minutes. After soaking, let the shoe air dry.

Step 4: Salt Sprinkle

For tough stains, sprinkle salt on the stained area of the shoe and let it sit for 15 minutes. The salt will help absorb any remaining red wine stains and make them easier to remove. Use a clean cloth to brush off the salt before moving on to the next step.

Step 5: Bicarbonate of Soda Paste

Make a paste using equal parts bicarbonate of soda and cold water. Apply the paste on the red wine stain and let it sit for one hour. Once the hour is up, use a clean cloth to scrub the paste off. Rinse the shoe with cold water and allow it to air dry.
