The first step is to rinse stain as soon as possible with cold water and white vinegar. Dab the spot gently with a cloth, never wiping or rubbing it, because that could cause the stain to spread or set. You can also try lightly blotting with club soda instead of vinegar. Once you’ve done this, you can begin to tackle it with a detergent specifically made for treating delicate fabrics.
Mix a small amount of detergent with cold water and place a drop onto stain. Blot the spot with a white paper towel or clean cloth and allow the detergent to work its way into the fabric. If the stain has not completely disappeared, repeat the process until it is gone. Please note that some detergents contain harsh chemicals so if you are using one that was not specifically made for delicate fabrics, be sure to test a small area first.
If you still have a stubborn stain, an enzyme detergent or dishwashing liquid may be necessary. Mix equal parts of the detergent and cold water, and use a white cloth or paper towel to blot solution onto the stain. Allow it to sit for five minutes and then rinse with cold water.
When all else fails, take your scarf to a professional dry cleaner. They have the tools and skills to deal with any type of stubborn stain, and can handle color fading and any other damage.
Remember — always treat the stain as quickly as possible. The chances of removing it completely vary depending on type of fabric and the size of the stain, but by taking the right steps, you can keep your favorite scarf looking its best.
