Red wine spills are a common occurrence and can leave your leather shoes looking stained or discolored. The key to removing the stain is to act quickly before the wine has an opportunity to set in. You should remove as much excess liquid as possible, and then focus on remaining stain. Depending on the severity of the stain, it may just require a simple cleaning solution, or you may need to enlist the help of a professional cleaner.

What You Need

  • Clean cloth or sponge
  • Dish soap
  • White vinegar
  • Soft-bristled toothbrush (optional)
  • Leather cleaner (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Carefully blot the stain with a clean cloth or sponge to absorb as much liquid as possible.
  2. Mix 1/4 teaspoon of mild dish soap and one cup of warm water together. Dip a clean cloth or sponge in the mixture and gently scrub the affected area, being sure to avoid scrubbing too hard or using a rough cloth that could further damage the material.
  3. Rinse soapy water off with clean water and let leather air dry.
  4. If the stain is still present, mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar and one cup of warm water together. Dip a clean cloth or sponge into the mixture and scrub the affected area. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush for tough stains.
  5. Rinse the vinegar off with clean water and let leather air dry.
  6. If stain still persists, apply a small amount of leather cleaner and conditioner to the stained area, scrub in, and then buff and polish.

Additional Tips and Advice

  • Always test any cleaner in an inconspicuous area before applying it to the entire shoe.
  • When treating stains, only use circular motions as scrubbing back and forth could damage the leather.
  • Using a leather conditioner after cleaning will help restore the material’s original color and shine.
  • If the stain is still present after cleaning, bring your shoes to a professional cleaner, who may be able to remove the stain without causing any further damage.
