Removing Red Wine Stains from Clothes

The first step in tackling a red wine stain is to act fast . The quicker you take action, more successful your cleanup efforts will be. Grab a paper towel or cloth and blot stain in order to lift out as much red wine as possible. Don't rub the spot as this might spread the stain further.

Once you've blotted and absorbed as much of the liquid as possible, use a gentle laundry detergent to work the stain out of the fabric. Apply a small amount of detergent to stained area and let it sit for 3-5 minutes. Then use a clean cloth and warm water to lather and wash the stain. Rinse with cool water and repeat until stain fades.

Treating Red Wine Stains On Delicate Fabrics

Leggings and other delicate garments may require a gentler approach to cleaning red wine stains. White vinegar is often an effective and less harsh alternative to soap or detergents. Pour 1 tablespoon of white vinegar over stained area and then blot the spot with a damp cloth. Continue blotting until the stain fades away.

Stain Prevention and Care Tips

  • Always check clothing labels and take note of specific laundering and care instructions (e.g. wash on delicate cycle, hand wash only, no bleach, etc.) for optimal care.
  • Pre-treat stains with a stain remover and let item soak until ready for washing.
  • Launder separately from other items, using cold water and a mild detergent.
  • If possible, air dry clothes. If not, machine dry on low heat when appropriate.
