The first step in removing a red wine stain is to blot the affected area with a cloth or paper towel. Do not rub cloth; simply put it on the stained area and press down gently. This will absorb the excess liquid, making it easier to remove the stain.
Mix together a solution of water and mild dishwashing liquid, such as Dawn. Dip a clean cloth or sponge in the solution and dab it onto stain. Avoid rubbing, as this could spread the stain further.
Once you have applied the solution to the stain, rinse the area with cold water. Use a clean cloth to dab the area and check for any remaining stain. If some of the stain remains, repeat steps 2 and 3.
Once you are satisfied that the stain has been removed, it is time to wash the garment according to its directions. If the garment can be washed in a washing machine, use the gentle cycle and select the lowest temperature setting. However, if you are dealing with a delicate fabric such as silk or wool, you may want to consider handwashing.
After washing, dry the garment according to instructions on the label. If the garment is suitable for machine drying, use lowest temperature setting. Otherwise, hang the garment up and allow it to air dry.
