Use dry paper towels or cloth to blot the stain. This will absorb as much of the red wine as possible before trying to treat deeper into the carpet fibers.
Combine equal parts white vinegar and baking soda in a bowl to create a thick paste.
Using a spoon or spatula, spread the paste onto stain. For larger stains, you may need to make multiple batches of the paste.
Allow the paste to dry for 30 minutes. This will give paste enough time to break up the dried wine.
Once paste has dried, use a vacuum cleaner to remove paste from the carpet. This will also remove any dried wine left in the carpet.
Using a wet towel and cold water, rinse the area where the paste was. Be careful not to scrub the area as this can damage carpet fibers.
Use a clean towel to blot the area to remove excess moisture.
Apply a carpet cleaner to the area, and allow it to sit for 15 minutes. Follow the directions on the package for best results.
After the carpet cleaner has had enough time to work, use a wet cloth to remove the cleaning solution from area.
Once all of the cleaning solution is removed, leave area to dry. Once it has completely dried, the stain should be gone.
