When you realize that you've spilled red wine on your evening gown, the first thing you should do is to take a clean, white cloth and blot the stain to soak up as much of liquid as possible. Do not rub it into the material; blots should be light and steady.
Once you’ve removed as much of the liquid as possible, you should rinse the area of the stain with cold water. This helps to break down some of stain so it’s easier to remove. Be careful not to rub the stain during this step, as this will smear wine further into the material.
Mix a small amount of gentle dish soap with warm water in a bowl, then dip a soft-bristled brush, such as an old toothbrush, into it. Gently scrub area of the stain with the soapy water, and use a cloth to dab away excess suds. Rinse area with cold water when you’re done.
Purchase a specialized red wine stain remover and follow instructions on the package. Apply according to directions and allow the remover to work its magic. Once complete, rinse the area with cold water.
If the stain has been successfully removed, finish by laundering the garment according to the cleaning instructions listed on the item’s care label. Be sure to launder entire piece in case any residual stain remains, as not to leave any mark behind.
