Gently blot the stained area with a clean paper towel or cloth to absorb as much of the red wine as possible. Make sure to avoid pressing down hard on the spot to prevent the stain from sinking in further.
Mix an ounce of white vinegar with an ounce of laundry detergent and apply it on the stain. Work the solution into the fabric with a clean sponge or soft bristled brush. Allow the solution to sit for 10-15 minutes.
Rinse pre-treated spot with cold water several times. If a light stain remains, repeat steps two and three.
Put your cardigan in a washing machine using cold water and the gentle cycle. Include one cup of white vinegar during the rinse cycle to help get rid of any remaining stains. Avoid using bleach, as it could discolor your cardigan.
Dry your cardigan on the lowest setting in the dryer and make sure not to over-dry the garment. If there are still stains visible, repeat steps one through five.
