It happens to the best of us: You're enjoying a glass of red wine with dinner and then, suddenly, it's spilling all over your favorite button-down shirt. Don't panic! There are several ways to remove red wine stains from your clothing, as long as you act quickly.
To begin, take a paper towel or clean cloth and start blotting the stain. Do not use any type of scrubbing motion to avoid pushing the stain further into the fabric. Keep doing this until the wine is no longer seeping out of the fabric.
Once the wine is no longer seeping out, soak the stained area in a mixture of white vinegar and warm water. Leave fabric to soak for at least 15 minutes.
After the fabric has soaked, apply a generous amount of dishwashing detergent to the stain. Again, avoid scrubbing the fabric; this will help to lift remaining stain away from the fabric's fibers. Let the detergent sit for an additional 15 minutes.
Rinse the fabric off with cold water and then repeat Steps 2 and 3. If the stain is still present, add a few tablespoons of baking soda to the vinegar and water mixture in Step 2. This should help to remove stain.
When the stain is completely removed, throw shirt in the washing machine on the cold water setting. Hang shirt to dry when it's finished.
Red wine stains on clothing can be a nightmare, but with a bit of knowledge and patience, you can easily remove them from your button-down shirt. Just make sure to act quickly, and use the steps outlined above for best results.
