Step 1: Blot the Stain

Once you’ve spilled red wine on your board shorts, the first thing you should do is blot the stain with a paper towel or a clean cloth. Don’t rub or scrub the fabric, as this can cause the stain to spread. Instead, gently press the cloth into the fabric so that it absorbs as much liquid as possible.

Step 2: Soak in Cold Water

After you’ve blotted stain, fill a sink or basin with cold water and add a few drops of liquid detergent. Submerge your board shorts in the water and let them soak for 30 minutes. The cold water and detergent will help to break up the stain and make it easier to remove.

Step 3: Pretreat the Stain with Vinegar

Mix a solution of equal parts vinegar and cold water and apply directly to stain with a sponge. Let it sit for a few minutes and then rinse off with cold water. This will help to further loosen the stain before you start to wash the shorts.

Step 4: Wash in the Washing Machine

Put your board shorts in the washing machine with a mild detergent, but avoid using chlorine bleach or any type of harsh cleaner. Make sure to select a gentle cycle and use cold water for the rinse cycle. Add a fabric softener if you want to soften the fabric of your shorts.

Step 5: Air Dry

After washing, hang your board shorts up to air dry. Avoid using a dryer or any type of heat source, as this can set the stain and make it harder to remove. Once they’re dry, inspect the shorts to make sure the stain is gone.
