The best way to clean most red wine stains from a blazer depends on the material. Start by checking the label for cleaning instructions. For wool, a combination of gentle soap and cool water should do the trick. To treat the stain, use a soft cloth to dab a mixture of cool water and detergent made for wool onto the stain until it fades.

If the blazer is made of polyester, a dab of rubbing alcohol may be used first. Put a cloth covered with rubbing alcohol onto the stain and keep it there for several seconds until it begins to lighten. Afterwards, rinse with a damp cloth and lukewarm water.

Synthetic materials like rayon require a different approach. Before treating the stain, read the label and carefully follow washing instructions, bearing in mind that most rayon should never be washed in hot water. After reading the label, you may either choose to get a cleaner formulated for rayon or, if none is available, mix a solution of equal parts white vinegar with warm water. Dip a cotton swab into the solution and apply it directly to the stain in a gentle circular motion. Do this again with a damp cloth and lukewarm water until stain is gone.

Finally, for silk, the safest and most recommended route is to spot-clean with a dry-cleaning solvent. Put dry-cleaning solvent onto the stain with a white cloth and a mild dabbing motion. Be sure no excess liquid is used as it could damage the silk fabric. If this technique doesn’t work, take the garment to a dry cleaner.

Getting red wine stains out of a blazer doesn’t have to be a cause for major stress. Just make sure you know right cleaning tips and techniques for the type of fabric making up your blazer and you should be able to get rid of the stain without any major issues.
