What You'll Need

  • Baking soda or cornstarch
  • White paper towels or cloth
  • White vinegar
  • Mild detergent

Instructions

  1. Remove any excess liquid from the red wine stain using white paper towels or cloth. Place a fresh paper towel or cloth underneath the stained area and press gently.
  2. Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch on top of the stain and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. This will help absorb some of the moisture.
  3. Mix a solution of 1 teaspoon of white vinegar and 1 cup of warm water.
  4. Dip a clean, white cloth into the vinegar solution and dab at the stain. Avoid rubbing the stain, as it can damage delicate fabrics.
  5. Once the red wine stain is removed, rinse the area with cool water. Then use a mild detergent and cold water to wash the entire garment.
  6. Allow the garment to air dry, then examine stain. If the stain is still visible, repeat Steps 2-5 until the stain is removed.

Tips

  • If fabric is delicate, think twice before trying to remove a red wine stain yourself. Call a professional cleaner if in doubt.
  • Always treat stains as quickly as possible after they occur.
  • Be sure to test any cleaning solutions on an inconspicuous area first, to ensure that color of the fabric won't be affected.
